One of the things people enjoy about alcohol is that it lowers inhibitions. This creates the experience of finding it easier to do certain things: public speaking, approaching someone we find attractive, getting over social anxiety, and the like. However, the more we rely on a substance to create a chemical effect to help us with our behavior, the more we need the substance to do the same thing and the more anxious we feel about doing those things without the substance. This is a recipe for psychological dependence. The longer road of practice and discipline will increase anxiety in the short term but, over time, will lower your anxiety response and increase confidence and proficiency. You will not need a substance to do those things. Plus, you get to avoid things like hangovers, liver damage, weight gain, risk of diabetes, etc. Thank you to Brian Crockett of Brian Crockett Counseling for this Brain Boost. #buildingbrightbrains

Great things are going on throughout the Medway Public Schools. With the new year comes a new, featured way to share exciting programs and experiences within our schools. Each month, we will highlight one Spotlight on Excellence, a video featuring one element of programming pride across our PK-12 district. This month, we are excited to highlight Medway High School’s Innovation Pathway Program in our first Spotlight on Excellence. The Innovation Pathway Program allows students to gain specialty skills, competencies, and experiences in Healthcare and Social Assistance, Information Technology, or Engineering (with more Pathway Programs being explored in the future). In addition to their typical coursework, Pathway students engage in specific technical courses, advanced courses, and either a Capstone Course or an internship experience. We were thrilled to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the McGovern Elementary School today to open the dramatic play area in the playground. The new area includes a newly constructed pirate ship as well as multiple playstations (kitchens and chalkboards) to allow for dramatic play, as well as a staging area where children are encouraged to use their creativity to express themselves. Thank you to the Medway Foundation for Education for securing a grant that allowed this equipment to be built, delivered, and installed for our students at McGovern Elem. A massive shoutout to the students in Mr. Barstow's carpentry class at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School for their hard work and expertise !
